Welcome, and thank you for your interest in submitting your short story to the Ansible. This is the place for the weird, the unusual, and the bizarre. If you have a well-written, well-edited, and finely-crafted short story, then the Ansible is the place for you to share it. Welcome aboard.
We’re looking for short stories that meet these criteria:
Word Length: Between 1,000 and 16,000 words. No exceptions.
Pay: The Ansible does not currently pay for submitted work. We hope to be able to do this soon, as we believe strongly that authors should be paid for their work. We do, however, offer a writing credit and exposure — a place for your work (and you!) to be seen and to be noticed.
Rights: We reserve first world electronic rights only. For more info, check out Neil Clarke’s explanation here.
Genre: Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror genres and their subcategories are all welcome here.
Content: We keep it PG-13 and below around here. We enjoy bizarre, but we do NOT want to see profanity-strewn work. No F-bombs. No graphic descriptions of sexual acts, rape, murder, or blood and guts, pedophilia or necrophilia, etc. Use your judgement, but err on the side of caution. We want our younger readers and those who do not wish to read explicit content to enjoy the Ansible, too.
Absolutely NO fan-fiction. Original work only. No Exceptions.
We will not divulge your personal information, including email, names, etc, unless compelled to by law, or given explicit permission from the author. You will never receive spam from us, and we shall never sell your information to any one — ever.
Below you will find our submission form. Fill out the form and be sure to complete all mandatory fields. Include the FIRST 500 WORDS of your short story in the SAMPLE field.
Once your information has been submitted, you will receive a confirmation message.
Please allow us at least two weeks to accept or reject your work. Upon acceptance, we will provide you with an email address to send the ENTIRE manuscript as a .doc, .docx, .pages, .rtf, .txt, or .pdf file with the manuscript formatted for online publication. If we think your story is a good fit for the Ansible, we’ll be in touch. If not, you’ll receive a polite ‘no thanks’.
If your work is rejected, please do NOT resubmit the same work unless it has undergone drastic changes or edits. Feel free to submit a different story, however do not submit more than ONE story at a time.
